Dior Jelly Lip Pen: review & swatches

I passed by the Dior counter yesterday, and was stoked to see the Summer 2013 display is out at last!

Dior's Summer 2013 collection

Having reviewed the mini nail polish duos last week (read here) and the Nude Tan blusher/bronzer duos (here), the new item that caught my attention this round, were the new Jelly Lip Pens!

Here’s the media release image:

Despite it’s name, the Dior Jelly Lip Pens were not jelly-like in any way.  Instead, I found it to be very similar in consistency and usage as the Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stains.  Dior’s iteration is less pigmented, more like a tinted lip balm with a bit of gloss finish.  Given how sheer the color is, it is perhaps more suited for a day lounging by the poolside / beach, rather than a trip to the mall.

The color swatches below should give you a better idea:

Copacabana intrigued me the most.  Although it looked like a dark brown on the pen, it swatched out to be a nice mauvish brown that shows up better on my skin than the rests.  Carioca is my fav, a nice, cheery coral.  Ilhabela is a light princess pink, and Gaia is a nude pink.

As a luxury brand, Dior’s Jelly Lip Pens are priced accordingly at SGD44 each, and are limited edition.  Personally, I find the colors to be somewhat uninspiring (if I had to pick one, it’d be Carioca).  And given how sheer it is, not quite as relevant to my lifestyle (mostly in the office).  However, I did like the fact these are auto-sharpening with a twist-up mechanism, which is not a new invention but welcome all the same.

What do you think?  Will you be rushing out to stock up on these?

PS: Laura Mercier turned out some of these lip pens for summer 2013 too!  These are quite different… read about them here.
